The Mimetic Origins of Self - Consciousness in Phylo - , Onto - and Robotogenesis

چکیده
The paper presents and defends the mimetic hypothesis concerning the origin of selfconsciousness in three different kinds of development: hominid evolution, the mind of the child, and the epigenesis of mind within an artificial autonomous system, a robot. The proposed crucial factor for the emergence of self-consciousness is the ability to map between one’s own subjective bodyimage and those of others, supported by a partially innate ‘mirror system’ [1]. Combined with social interaction, this gives rise to intersubjectivity and starts a developmental cycle of (a) increased objectification of one’s body-image, (b) increased volitional control, (c) increased understanding of the intentionality of others and (d) increased understanding of one’s own intentionality. The hypothesis has far reaching theoretical implications: self-consciousness and empathy are co-determined; language and tool-use are not causes, but rather consequences of increased self-consciousness; most of the symptoms of autism can be accounted for as resulting from an impairment of the mirror system. The implications are negative for non-representational approaches to robotics [2] and in favor of approaches based on imitation/mimesis [3], [4]. My sense of myself grows by imitation of you and my sense of yourself grows in terms of myself. James Baldwin

Naturalizing Self-Consciousness
The crucial problem of self-consciousness is how to account for knowing self-reference without launching into a regress or without presupposing self-consciousness rather than accounting for it (circle). In the literature we find two bottom-up proposals for solving the traditional problem: the postulation of nonconceptual forms of self-consciousness and the postulation of a pre-reflexive form of...
متن کاملAnxiety level among Iranian football referees: The role of self-consciousness and coping styles
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the level of anxiety experienced by Iranian football referees, and to predict the level of referees’ competitive anxiety according to their self-consciousness and coping styles. One hundred thirteen male football referees voluntarily completed a demographic questionnaire, Self-Consciousness Scale (SCS; Fenigstein, Scheier, & Buss, 1975), and ref...

This research studies the origins of identity among the female students in Khalkhal high-schools in 2012-2013. Data was gathered through the survey method (questionnaires) and the library method. The dependent variable was the study of identity seeking, but the independent variable includes the degree of religious orientation, social status of the family, the access to foreign networks, the sol...

In this chapter, I discuss self-consciousness as a unique feature of our species. as a student of early childhood, my goal is to provide some developmental light on the origins and consequences of this feature that arguably shapes human experience. at the core of my argument is the idea that self-consciousness is inseparable from the human propensity to take an ethical stance toward others, but...
متن کاملPostcolonial Borges: “Colonized Intellectual” and“Double Consciousness” in “The Nothingness of Personality”
Using Du Bois’s “Double Consciousness” and Fanon’s “Colonized Intellectual”, we contend that Borges’s essay “The Nothingness of Personality” can be deemed postcolonial. Our study turns to the postcolonial world of Latin America, with a special focus on Buenos Aires, addressing the alienation, hybridity, “two-ness”, and the othered state of Borges as an immigrant to Latin America after the World...
